IVANOV a la Makassar: a work-in-progress at Performance Lab#2, Rumata’ Art Space’s International artist-in-residency

Back to Makassar after Residency at Accademia Mutamenti in Tuscany-Italy, with my fellow artistic director in 5ToMidnight, Ethan Chia, we managed to devised a work-in-progress for Anthon Chekhov’s IVANOV scene I. During ten days training plus rehearsal, we devised the play with talented young dramatists from Makassar: a young female actress-Hana Sephiyang, dedicated theater-maker-Askar, an adventurer artist-Aji Ilham Wiyono, multi talented dancer-Wahu Komo Lahang, talented Singaporean performer-Candice Teow, restless performer-Andi Rizky, and intense actor-Miftahuddin Palannari. During 25 minutes, with Makassar taste, which was, gestures, languages, slangs, props and the place we’ve imagine about Chekov’s.

During the residency, the whole members, again had chance to involved in our training sessions and trained for two days by Bapak Serang Dakko or Daeng Serang, a living national heritage, a maestro from Makassar which living around Fort Somba Opu where the site used to be the heart of Kingdom of Gowa untill 17th century. At the end of the residency, we presented the act I of Chekhov’s Ivanov. Two months later, Ethan Chia managed to staged it at Le Park cafe in Singapore with Singaporean performers with a lovely respond from Singaporean audiences.
